Gin-Note™: A Guide to Understanding Gin's Flavour Profile

Gin-Note™: A Guide to Understanding Gin's Flavour Profile
Have you ever looked at a bottle of gin and wondered what to expect before purchasing it?
Ever wished the flavour could be communicated clearer to help you make a choice?
When the label says orange, is this a subtle flavour, or intense? When it says rhubarb, is it sickly sweet or delicate?
Choosing the perfect gin can be a daunting task. Ask yourself, do you choose a bottle of gin purely based on the bottle and label design? With a huge variety of gin options on the market, it’s now time to make a more informed choice. And that’s where Gin-Note™ steps in, offering a clear and visual representation of a gin's flavour characteristics, empowering you to appreciate and enjoy your gin choice beyond simply aesthetics.
Created by the Gin Guild, who we are proud to be a member of, Gin-Note™ aim to clearly explain the flavour in a bottle of gin with a visual representation of the level of the flavour profiles and highlighting key botanicals.
Simply put. Gin-Note™ equips gin drinkers to navigate the diverse gin landscape with confidence. Plus, help gin drinkers create exceptional cocktails, where the right combination of botanicals can elevate a simple mix into a masterpiece.
As for Masons, our gin range offers something for everyone’s taste preference. If you’re looking for a drier and more herbal tipple, you may be more swayed towards our Tea Edition, whereas if you’re more of a fruity gin fan, our Fruits of the Tropics edition offers fruity and citrus characteristics.
Each of the Masons editions balances the botanicals distilled beautifully with each one giving a distinct gin flavour profile and a gin which perfectly fits into each category listed below.
Gin-Note™ characterises the gin flavour profiles into these categories-
Juniper: green, resinous notes of juniper berries; can be broken down to include spruce, pine needles, cedar, pine, etc. (Original, 10th Anniversary)
Citrus: bright, zingy and zesty; the flavours commonly associated with citrus fruit such as lemon, lime, orange and grapefruit, but also including the citrus character of botanicals such as coriander, lemongrass, verbena, etc. (Orange & Lime Leaf)
Spice: including both sweet spice: e.g. cinnamon, cassia, nutmeg, cardamom, clove; and savoury spice: e.g. cumin, pepper and ginger. (Pear & Pink Peppercorn)
Herbal: herbal, leafy notes, both dried and fresh, including basil, rosemary, thyme, mint, sage, fennel, etc. (Tea Edition)
Fruit: capturing the plump, fruity character of a gin beyond citrus. Includes notes of berries (strawberry, raspberry, etc.), stone fruit (cherry, plum, peach, etc.) and any other fruit. (Fruits of the Tropics)
Floral: perfumed characteristics of flowers such as rose, violet, orange blossom, lavender. (Lavender)
